In North 24 Parganas, a 10th-grade girl was allegedly abducted and raped by a neighboring youth while she was on her way to tuition classes on Friday evening. The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Gaighata police station. According to police reports, the accused allegedly forced the girl into a vehicle, binding her hands before taking her to a secluded location.
The victim returned home but did not inform her family about the incident. On Saturday, she attempted suicide, prompting her family to investigate. Family members found her in distress and, after questioning her, she disclosed the details of the assault. Following this, her family filed a formal complaint at the Gaighata police station, leading to the arrest of the accused by local police.
Investigations revealed that the accused had allegedly been harassing the victim for over a year. Reports indicate that the victim's family had previously sought community mediation regarding the harassment. Allegations from the family state that the accused made threats to the victim to prevent her from reporting the incidents, contributing to her silence regarding the assault.
In the wake of the incident, Gaighata MLA Subrata Thakur visited the police station to support the victim’s family. The police confirmed the arrest of the suspect and stated that an investigation is ongoing. Officials from the Trinamool Congress indicated that they have not intervened in the case.
